Stackable Vertical Garden Planter
This project started because my school was developing an initiative around vertical gardening. We wanted something that could grow a good amount of food in a limited space, but we decided not to go with hydroponics because of the cold weather here and the extra management it can require. So I designed this modular, stackable vertical garden planter.
One of the main things I wanted was to give the plants plenty of root space and room to grow. A problem I found with a lot of vertical planters online is that the planting pockets are quite small. They are fine for smaller plants, but I wanted something more spacious that could comfortably grow things like lettuce, kale, spinach, herbs and other leafy greens.
This is the design I ended up with. Each level uses most of the available print bed while still fitting on a Bambu Lab P1S, or another printer with a roughly 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume. The planting pockets are much larger than many other vertical planter designs I have seen, giving the roots more space to develop.
The whole system is modular and stackable, so you can add levels as you need. I have been testing this design for around half a year now, and it has been growing a variety of vegetables really well. From what I have seen so far, the plants seem very happy with the extra space.
This upload is the first version of the design. The levels simply stack on top of each other and rely on gravity to stay in place. In practice, this has been more secure than I expected. It has been used in a school environment with kids regularly playing around it, and it has held up well.
I have also made another version that uses fasteners to bolt the whole tower together for extra security. That version is still being tested, and I will release it once I am happy with it.
